This page took a little longer than usual to complete because I totally threw my back out this week. I can't sit for longer than fifteen minutes without my back being in total agony. Only by lying on a hard floor for a half hour or so restores equanimity. So drawing stinks (ever try drawing while lying on your back on a hard floor?) and work has slowed down considerably.
Plus I've become generally grouchy because of some problems with a client and attempting to stick to a vegan diet .... but that's another blog entry. (I would KILL for a toasted poppyseed bagel with cream cheese now!)
I'm generally happy with this page though there are problems. As Older Saladin and the Anonymous Narrator converse they stand in front of a flower shop. I like how the flower shop turned out and panel 2 especially is good. Still, panel 3 is half-assed (I couldn't make up my mind about where brooding younger Saladin was (maybe inside the refugee tent where his family is staying?) and I stuck his younger sister in the background because I couldn't think of anything better. I also don't know what Saladin's younger sister is holding either... I didn't want to give her a doll (too cliche) so I decided that maybe she was helping her mother fold laundry... but it's poorly drawn)... and I'm even less pleased with panel 4. Poorly-drawn bus, poorly-drawn background... sigh. The last panel is okay but not as good as it could have been.
Even worse, the next page is going to involve a lot of action (only effective if drawn EXACTLY right!), Israeli soldiers in combat gear (groan... so hard to render realistically) and lots and lots and lots of semi-automatic gunfire (AAARG!). Guns are my illustration kryptonite. I've been really cheating on the guns up to now (with mixed results) but now I'm going to have to print out some actual visual aids and draw the damn things correctly!
